Nee Kee Wa Nan Initiative: November 2024 Search Updates

November 1, 2024

The Nee Kee Wa Nan Initiative recently hosted a series of important events in November 2024 as part of the commencement of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) searches in Fort Albany. These efforts, guided by ceremony and community engagement, aim to honor truths, support healing, and ensure the inclusion of all voices.

Key Highlights:
  1. Ceremonial Preparation
On November 8th, the Working Group emphasized the importance of preparing for emotional reactions during the searches. Medicine pouches filled with cedar were created to provide protection and support to participants.
  2. Lighting of the Sacred Fire
On November 9th, a Sacred Fire was lit to burn for four days, offering guidance, safety, and support during this critical time.
  3. Community Hall Meeting
During the Band Council General Meeting, the Working Group updated attendees on the initiative’s progress and future plans. Community members shared their truths and feedback, with one suggestion to use the word "truth" instead of "story" to better reflect the gravity of these experiences.
  4. Community Dinner
On November 12th, approximately 49 attendees gathered for a meal and discussion. Information about the initiative’s findings, including student names and maps, was shared in an accessible manner.
  5. Debriefs and Support
Two debrief sessions highlighted the need for mental health supports, improved communication, and clear information about GPR processes to ensure community understanding and engagement.
