As part of the ongoing work of the Nee Kee Wa Nan Initiative, the community recently welcomed the GPR and LiDAR team to help uncover and map areas of historical significance in Fort Albany. This advanced technology is helping us visualize both the past and present in ways we’ve never seen before.
Key Highlights:
- LiDAR Mapping: Using drone technology, the team conducted surveys over key areas, including the St. Anne’s Residential School site and the Old Post location. The LiDAR data allowed us to see hidden details, like old paths, field patterns, and structures that have long been covered by vegetation.
- Orthophotos: High-resolution aerial images were created, providing a detailed view of the land and enabling us to identify areas that need further investigation.
- Digital Elevation Models (DEM): By stripping away vegetation and other surface details, the DEM provided clear topographical maps, highlighting human-made features and subtle changes in the landscape that may hold clues to our community’s history.
The results of this mapping effort are instrumental in focusing our next steps, including ground-penetrating radar surveys and further exploration of these areas.
The initiative remains deeply guided by the stories and testimonies of Survivors and Elders, whose knowledge has shaped the direction of this work.
